Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers(espn.go.com)- The Los Angeles Dodgers have been sticking with Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley because their other options have been limited by injuries and because they think the two players’ experience with this time of year will pay off in the end.

Wednesday night, they began to see the returns on that faith. Rollins and Utley sparked the Dodgers’ 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks by breaking a tie, and snapping the Dodgers out of a deep hitting funk, in the eighth inning.

The old Phillies led the Dodgers out of the dark. The Dodgers had managed just one hit through seven innings when Rollins bunted his way on for a single and Utley yanked a double over right fielder Ender Inciarte's head. Rookie Corey Seager then hit a soaring two-run home run just inside the right-field foul pole.

Considering the Dodgers had to scramble to find a replacement for Zack Greinke, who missed a start with a sore right calf, the piecemeal pitching was the story of the game. Starter Carlos Frias and a handful of relievers combined for a reasonable imitation of what Greinke has been doing, but the Dodgers have been in an offensive funk so for the longest time that their performance simply matched Arizona’s pitching efforts.

Paul Goldschmidt is the biggest Dodger-killer of them all. He mashed a solo home run off Frias in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. It was Goldschmidt’s 21st home run against the Dodgers in fewer than 300 at-bats. No other active player has hit so many long balls against the Dodgers. He also has 20 doubles and is batting .339 against L.A.

The Dodgers’ only run off Chase Anderson came on Utley’s leadoff home run in the first inning. A.J. Pollock made a leaping attempt and missed it by inches, the ball ricocheting off his glove.

The Dodgers have been struggling to score against pitchers both decorated and little-known lately. Anderson is somewhere in the middle. He set a new high for strikeouts in a game, 10, in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit over six innings. At one point, five straight Dodgers went down swinging. The Dodgers don’t want those four games in San Francisco next week to mean anything, and now there’s a chance they won’t. The Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the NL West is six with 11 games remaining, and they have four games before they get to San Francisco. They also gained some ground in the home-field advantage race. They now lead the New York Mets by 1½ games to start the National League Division Series at home.

The series concludes Thursday at 12:10 p.m. PT. Clayton Kershaw (14-7, 2.18 ERA) opposes fellow left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-4, 2.99 ERA).
