Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves

price per head bookmakingThe Washington Nationals look to get their struggling offense going and snap a six-game slide on Tuesday night when they resume a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves.

Expected to dominate the National League East this season, the Nats instead have plated just 14 runs over their current slide and have fallen to 7-13 on the season after losing last night's series opener 8-4.

In addition to the issues at the plate, the Nationals have allowed 22 runs over their past three games as starter Doug Fister was the latest to struggle. He yielded five runs -- four earned -- over 5 2/3 innings on Monday and committed two of his club's four errors on errant pickoff attempts.

Here are three things of note from the game:

Kelly Johnson, Eric Stults come up big

Given a spot start in left field, Johnson was the Braves' biggest bat on Monday. He went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Stults turned in his second straight solid start to pick up his first Atlanta win, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.

Nationals' horrific defense continues

Washington made four errors on Monday night, resulting in three unearned runs. Two of the miscues were on errant pickoff throws by starting pitcher Doug Fister, while another was a bobbled grounder by Bryce Harper that allowed an extra base in the first inning. Embattled shortstop Ian Desmond made yet another error on a ground ball, already his ninth in 20 games.

Hard slide by Simmons leads to controversy

Atlanta shortstop Andrelton Simmons went from first to third on Fister's second error in the fifth, but slid in late and in the process injured the hand of Washington third baseman (and former Brave) Yunel Escobar. The Nationals took exception and reliever Rafael Martin plunked Simmons during his next at-bat in the seventh. Benches did not clear, but Braves outfielder Jonny Gomes was ejected for arguing from the top of the dugout steps.

The series continues with Game 2 on Tuesday night (6:10 p.m., SportSouth). Atlanta ace Julio Teheran (2-1, 4.64 ERA) gets the start against Washington rookie A.J. Cole, called up to fill in for the injured Max Scherzer (sore thumb).

The Braves went 11-8 against the Nats last season.
