Angels Zack Cozart to have surgery on Torn Labrum

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Zack Cozart will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Cozart was placed on the 10-day disabled list June 15 after initially being diagnosed with a shoulder strain, but additional imaging and clinical examination revealed a need for surgery.

Cozart injured his left shoulder while making a diving catch on June 13, which forced him to leave the game. He was placed on the disabled list and has been out since then. Cozart went for a second opinion on his shoulder, which is when the surgery recommendation was made.

Cozart was a big free agent signing by the Angels over the offseason. He was signed to a three-year, $38 million deal and asked to move from shortstop to third base. He was batting .219/.296/.362 in 58 games with his new team. A longtime shortstop, he signed a three-year, $38 million deal to play third base for the Angels over the offseason.

Cozart had a career year with the Cincinnati Reds in 2017, batting .297 with 24 home runs and 63 RBIs and starting in the All-Star Game.

Luis Valbuena and David Fletcher have both seen time at third base since Cozart landed on the DL, though the position has been a bit of a hole for the Angels this season. Their third basemen have combined to post a .654 OPS, the second-lowest mark in the Majors.

The Angels did not release a timetable for Cozart's return, but the rehab for this type of procedure on a non-throwing arm is typically six to eight months, meaning he's likely to miss the rest of the season.

Cozart was the Angels primary third baseman, starting 32 of 58 games at the hot corner, before alternating between second and shortstop when Ian Kinsler and Andrelton Simmons were injured.
