Cavs to sign Veteran Kendrick Perkins

The Cavaliers will add one more to the roster, rounding out the playoff team. Kendrick Perkins, 13-year NBA veteran, will sign with the Cavs, taking the team's final roster spot for the playoffs, sources tell ESPN.

The Cavs released Perkins, 33, in the preseason, leaving him to play part of the season with the Canton Charge, Cleveland's G League affiliate.

Perkins was also on the Cavs playoff roster in 2015, making him part of the Cavs 2015 NBA finals team.

In 27 games with the Canton Charge (Cleveland's G League affiliate) this season, the 33-year-old big man averaged 8.7 points and 7.1 rebounds in 21.2 minutes per contest. His most recent NBA playing time came with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016.

Perkins averaged 6.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in his eight seasons with Boston and posted a career-best 10.1 points per game in 2009-10. He also helped the team win the 2007-08 championship and averaged a double-double (11.9 points and 11.6 rebounds) in 14 playoff games in 2008-09.

The 2008-09 season was part of a four-year stretch when he averaged at least 7.6 rebounds a night for Boston and the Thunder.

He provides veteran experience with 143 postseason appearances in his career and is familiar with the grind of the playoff race and what it takes to win once a team gets there.

That, along with his ability to help provide stability in the locker room, appeared to have intrigued the Cavaliers enough to take a chance on him for the remainder of the season.

The Cavs have done this before, having added Jones on the last day of the regular season in both 2016 and 2017. The team also signed signed center Edy Tavares on the last day of the regular season last year.
