Jay Cutler ruled out for Sunday, Matt Moore to start for Dolphins

The strange, painful season for Jay Cutler with the Miami Dolphins will include another missed game.

Cutler, who left last week’s game with a concussion, was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. Dolphins coach Adam Gase announced Cutler was out during his Friday press conference, according to multiple reports. Matt Moore will start.

Cutler’s season hasn’t been too enjoyable since he was signed out of retirement following Ryan Tannehill’s injury. He has struggled most of the time, and has suffered cracked ribs and a concussion. Cutler’s wife Kristin Cavallari wasn’t thrilled with football anymore when she posted on social media last week, and you have to wonder if Cutler regrets coming out of retirement to get beat up for a season. He’s getting $10 million from the Dolphins for his troubles, but it hasn’t been easy money.

Cutler has had concussion issues through his career. In 2012, a Chicago Tribune story said he had suffered five or six documented concussions dating back to college, and that was five years ago.

Cutler will presumably stay in the concussion protocol and will be the starter when he is cleared. At this point, he must be wondering if he’s better off sitting it out.

Backup quarterback Matt Moore will get his second start of the season for Miami. Moore previously started in a 40-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8. He also threw for 282 yards and a touchdown in relief of Cutler last week.

Expectations are not high for the Dolphins, regardless of who is under center. Miami is the biggest underdog in the NFL this weekend at plus-16 points to New England. The Dolphins haven't won a game at Gillette Stadium since 2008.

Miami (4-6) has little room for error if it wants to make the playoffs for the second straight season. The Dolphins likely need to win five of their last six games to have a chance.
