Women’s British Open

Kim Hyo-joo Kim Hyo-joo shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Women's British Open at Turnberry in Scotland. The fourth-ranked Kim, who shot a first-round 61 in winning the Evian Championship on her major championship debut last year, was leading by one stroke from Lydia Ko of New Zealand and Cristie Kerr of the United States.

New Zealand's world number two Lydia Ko, 17, and American Cristie Kerr are tied second after carding 66s.

Lydia Ko, whose 66 was her lowest score in a major, is looking to become the youngest winner of a major. She’ll be 18 years, three months, nine days on Sunday, seven months younger than Morgan Pressel when the American won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2007.

Lydia Ko and Cristie Kerr both ran the South Korean star close, with the pair carding rounds of six under to keep the leader under pressure. However, neither could match Kim's performance, as the golfer avoided bogey throughout her impressive round.

American superstar Michelle Wie had a disappointing day, shooting 76, taking her well out of contention.

Ko is trying not to think about the history she could create this weekend.“My goal is to have one major in my career,” Ko said, “but it doesn’t need to be now.”

Ko held the clubhouse lead for barely an hour before being overtaken by Kim, who rolled in five birdies and an eagle putt from 10 inches at the par-five 14th in her first round in a British Open.

It was a strong day for Asian golf, with the top positions dominated by their best talent.

Korea have Kim at the summit, with Q Baek and So Yeon Ryu tied for fourth after hitting rounds of five under. Japan's Shiho Oyama and Mika Miyazato sit one shot behind on four under, along with Taiwan's Teresa Lu. However, it was Kim who shined brightest on Thursday .
