Roger Goodell’s contract extension

On Saturday, Roger Goodell almost finished signing a contract extension for five more years. The commissioner almost close the contract that will keep him up working until the 2024 season. The news were reported by a corresponsal from Sports Business Journal. Even though they have been some inconveniences, the deal is almost finished. Many people are expecting the deal, as Goodell is one of the commissioners of the time. The deal he had will expire in 2019 if they don’t sign the extension. There have been some criticism about his work on the NFL, but the owner had always gave priority to him, as they prefer stability on top a fresh start.

The NFL had only just three commissioners and Goodell is one of those, beside Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue since the union of the league with AFL. Goodell reached this yer a revenue of $14 billion this season (a record) since the day he started back in 2006 reporting $6 billion. He said to the press he wants to reach $25 billion by 2027. The only reason he won more salary was because of the partnership between the league and the big media channels as NBC, Fox, CBS and ESPN. Probably the amount of money he makes is the reason why the owners prefer to keep him where he is even though the criticism on social media.

The commissioner has the power to suspend players for any violation of the conduct policy, as he has total autonomy. He had suspend many players, between them is Ezekiel Elliott who tried to underestimate his authority. There has been a lot of problems between the NFL and NFLPA about this specific case. Goodell has been criticised many times for his decisions, specifically in 2011. If he accepts the deal, they will be negotiations until 2021.
