Floyd Mayweather Retires

Floyd Mayweather Floyd Mayweather officially announced his retirement from boxing, and is officially retired, maintaining his undefeated record of 49-0.

Earning an excess of $800 million over the course of his 19-year career, the welterweight champion produced five world titles in five weight divisions.

Before announcing his retirement from the sport, Mayweather tied Rocky Marciano for the record of 49 wins and no losses.

The best boxer of this generation gives valid reasons for not wanting to fight again.

At 38, he doesn’t want to continue risking his health against younger, hungry opponents. Mayweather wants to spend more time with his four children, too, and contends even his absurdly lavish lifestyle won’t exceed the hundreds of millions he has made and invested in just the 2 1/2 years since he signed a six-fight contract with Showtime that helped make him the richest athlete in professional sports.

Mayweather’s motives for walking away now make perfect sense, but that doesn’t make it any easier to believe he’ll remain retired.

As Floyd announced his retirement once before back in 2009, he was asked if he might ‘get that itch’ to come back for another bout.

“My career is over. It’s official. My 49-0 record is part of boxing,” he said. “I am leaving the sport with all my faculties, I’m still sharp and smart. I’ve accomplished everything in this sport, there’s nothing else to accomplish.”

Mayweather finished his career on his knees, kneeling in the middle of the ring, as in prayer, after the final bell. Collins, when asked how Floyd will be remembered, said that although Mayweather does not have a style that he finds exciting, Mayweather will indeed be remembered as a classy, hard-working boxing master.

Mayweather, who says he made at least $70 million from the bout, reiterated his belief that he is the “best ever” because he is always “one step ahead of any fighter”. “We came out here to scrap it out, I didn’t know I was gonna have to wear my track shoes tonight but, he did what he had to do”.
