Gilberto Ramirez vs Dominik Britsch

Gilberto Ramirez and Dominik Britsch fight Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the WBO Super Middleweight title.

Unbeaten WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs) will be defending his title for the first time on July 23 against German fighter Dominik Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) in the co-feature bout on the Terence Crawford (28-0, 20 KO) vs. Viktor Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) card on HBO pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 24-year-old Ramirez recently won the WBO title in beating champion Arthur Abraham by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last April on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley III fight in Las Vegas. Ramirez won an easy fight in beating 36-year-old Abraham by the scores of 120-108 x 3.

It was too easy for the 6’2” Ramirez. Now after that victory, Ramirez will be taking a voluntary defense against the 28-year-old Britsch from Germany. It’s unclear why Ramirez’s 84-year-old promoter Bob Arum is matching him against such an easy mark in Britsch.

Gilberto Ramirez enters this fight with a 34-0 record that includes 24 knockouts. This will be Ramirez’s fifth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a April win over Arthur Abraham. Ramirez continues to flex his muscle since fighting in the United States, and he will defend his belt for the first time. Ramirez is a lengthy fighter at 6’2” and with a reach of 75 inches, and he’s able to use that range to work the body. Ramirez likes to slow his opponent down by working the midsection and also has a very strong left hand that can end a bout quickly. Ramirez does a better job of winning rounds and boxing smart, but he also has four knockouts in his last eight fights, so the power is there as well. This will be Ramirez’s fourth fight in Las Vegas.

Dominik Britsch enters this fight with a 32-2-1 record that includes 11 knockouts. Britsch has won six of his last seven fights and is coming off a February win over Slavisa Simeunovic. Britsch is making a rare US appearance and has a chance to take a belt back with him to Germany. Britsch is on the small side of 5’9” and likes to work the inside with punches to the body and counters to the head. Britsch doesn’t have the best resume in the world with his best fights probably coming against Aro Schwartz and Billy Lyell. Still, Britsch is an experienced fighter with 229 rounds under his belt and has really only lost once clear fight, which was a 2012 knockout to Roberto Santos. This will be Britsch’s third fight in the United States.

No disrespect to Britsch, as he is an experienced boxer and has held his own in Germany for the last decade. However, Ramirez is by far the more polished boxer on offense and defense. Ramirez is just too smart, too crafty and has the power advantage as well.
