Why Rice Will Win

The Miners are stuck in neutral on offense, but that changes this week in El Paso. The Owl pass defense is a mess, accounting for 24 touchdown passes and only two picks, which will give QB Mack Leftwich clean passing lanes to locate open receivers.

The Texas El Paso Miners have lost some key players and have their backs against the wall. The Miners never found their stride offensively and the defense couldn’t stop Southern Miss in a 34-13 road loss in week nine. The balanced Golden Eagles piled up 523 yards while UTEP managed 298 yards and struggled on the ground. LaQuintus Dowell was the top Miners runner with 52 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown but the run did not produce anything significant. Quarterback Mack Leftwich completed 16-32 for 197 yards with Jeremiah Laufasa and Jaquan  White combining for 104 yards on five receptions.

Why UTEP Will Win

The Owls have wilted in front of quality opponents, but UTEP doesn’t fit the profile. The Miners have been equally erratic, especially on offense, and will have a hard time outscoring QB Driphus Jackson and a Rice attack that will move the ball on second-rate defenses.

The Rice Owls probably have to win out and get help if they hope to reach the CUSA playoffs following a 42-17 defeat to visiting  West leader Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs could not be stopped in the air on the way to 455 yards while the Owls mustered just 281 yards with problems moving the ball on the ground.  Darik Dillard was the Owls top runner with 32 yards on eight touches. That meant Rice needed a huge performance from quarterback Driphus Jackson but his 180 yards and two touchdowns  on a 14-28 effort wasn’t enough. Nate German led the Owls with a pair of receptions on 62 yards but the team struggled without a rushing attack.

While neither team deserves a bonus game in December, both are still eyeing bowl eligibility. Behind the better backfield talent, Rice will slip past UTEP and back over the .500 mark with three games left.
