L.A. Unified cancels golf tournament

best Pay per Head PokerLos Angeles school district officials have canceled plans to hold a fundraising tournament at the Trump National Golf Club in response to Donald Trump’s incendiary remarks about Latin American immigrants

The tournament, scheduled for Nov. 23, was expected to bring in as much $70,000 for academic, music and other classes and activities, for elementary school students, many of whom are impoverished and from immigrant familias, to attend science camps in San Pedro and the Angeles National Forest.

The L.A. Unified School District has asked the club, located in Rancho Palos Verdes, to return its $7,500 deposit. So far, the club has declined to refund the money, according to the school system.

School officials feared the fundraiser would flop, because organizations and others are cutting ties with Trump over his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

“Being deeply offended by the comments is one thing, but we also realized the money we were trying to raise for our students was going to be negatively affected,” said the program’s director, Alvaro Cortés.

The district is looking for an alternate venue.

“There was absolutely no reason to host our largest fundraiser at a Trump facility after Donald Trump shared negative immigration comments,” said Alvaro Cortés

Trump described Mexicans who come to the United States without authorization as “killers” and “rapists” when announcing his candidacy for U.S. president in June.

Earlier this week, Trump reaffirmed his views on the subject: “The Mexican government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States. They are, in many cases, criminals, drug dealers, rapists.”

Univision and NBC have canceled plans to broadcast beauty pageants associated with Trump; Macy's announced it has discontinued a line of Trump clothing. NASCAR also has cut ties with Trump. And PGA of America, the professional golf association, won’t stage this year’s Grand Slam Tournament at the Rancho Palos Verdes course.

Cortés said he hoped Trump’s golf course would refund the $7,500 deposit, because the venue still has five months to book an event in place of LAUSD’s fundraiser. But Trump’s employees, he said, refused to return the money.

“They said they cannot return it, they wouldn’t return it and tough, we’re out of luck,” Cortés said.

Trump National Golf Club General Manager Lili Amini did not return calls for comment, nor did Trump Entertainment Resorts spokeswoman Kathleen McSweeney.
