Cardinals replace Yankees in Field of Dreams game against White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are now set to face the St. Louis Cardinals in a regular-season match on Aug. 13 near the Field of Dreams movie site, according to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register.

The New York Yankees were originally set to face the White Sox in the game, but the 60-game shortened campaign has led to more regional matchups, leaving the Cardinals to take their place.

The match will be played in a specially constructed stadium in Dyersville, Iowa, where the 1989 movie was filmed.

"We hope to have the option to play," MLB said in a statement, per Ronald Blum of the Associated Press. "Construction is continuing and we are following all CDC and state protocols regarding recommended safety practices, including social distancing, washing hands, and temperature checks before arriving to the site."

"We are monitoring ongoing events and plan to remain as flexible as these circumstances demand," the league added.

Though the newly created stadium is set to hold 8,000 fans, it's currently uncertain whether spectators will be permitted to attend amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the adjustments, keeping the White Sox involved likely remains a priority given the spirit of the game.

The film follows Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner), who builds a baseball field in the middle of his Iowa farm. Shoeless Joe Jackson appears out of the cornfield and is soon followed by other members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox.

The movie, released in 1989, starred Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster and Ray Liotta.

The new stadium will have an outfield wall—unlike in the original in the film—but it is projected to have windows to show the cornfield.
