Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White SoxThe Chicago White Sox are again set to meet with their NL neighbors to the north, but this time the Chicago Cubs will be playing south of 35th Street, and in the Sox-friendly confines of U.S. Cellular Field. The teams last met at Wrigley just prior to the All-Star Game, with the Sox taking two of the three games.

A crowd of 36,438 turned out at Wrigley Field on Wednesday to watch the Cubs try to pad their wild-card lead, while only 17,171 showed up at U.S. Cellular Field to watch the White Sox try to get close to the Angels in their wild-card chase.

This is not breaking news, of course. The Cubs always outdraw the Sox when the teams play at home at the same time, and we're also in the middle of tourist season, which means Wrigley is full of out-of-towners while the Cell is half-full with the diehards.

The Sox are now at least out of the cellar going into the second edition of this year’s Crosstown Classic, being tied for third in the Central with the Detroit Tigers and having just swept the AL West’s second-place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. But this won’t likely impress the Cubs, who have been on a tear, winning their last seven games and nine of their last ten.

The hardest part of being a Sox fan right now is watching the Cubs succeed with so many young players in their lineup, while a kid like Trayce Thompson might watch from the bench.

The Cubs have been the toast of the town since Joe Maddon showed up at his opening news conference and proclaimed, "We're going to be talking playoffs next year.

The Sox have been toast, period, since May 18, the last day they spent over .500. It has been agonizing to watch, and even sweeping the Angels can't numb the pain.

The Cubs are third in NL winning percentage – ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but behind their division-mate St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Sox are a very long shot at a Wild Card, but taking a second season series from the Cubs on the Sox’ home turf could boost the south sider’s morale on several levels.
