New York Yankees desperately need to win

The time for talk is over. The Yankees keep talking about winning series. Then they keep losing them. Their nine-game, three-series home stand beginning tonight against the Red Sox may be the Bombers’ final chance to make a playoff move.

The Yankees will require an awesome September to live to see October.

Currently, the Yankees are 8.5 games back of the first place Baltimore Orioles in the American League East and four games back for the final American League Wild Card spot with 27 games left to play. So the Yankees are basically in a must-win situation for every series they play in going forward, thus why their series at home against the Red Sox is crucial.

The second AL wild card spot remains within reach if the Yankees can find a way to win about two of every three games left on the schedule.

And while the Yankees are in need of every possible win, their offense is in need of Jacoby Ellsbury to be healthy for the final month of the season.

Despite playing in the limited at-bat, Ellsbury is not a given to play on tonight if the ankle is continuing to bother him and that would cause a serious problem for the team. Ellsbury is currently hitting .288 with 14 home runs and 64 RBI on the season and has been red-hot of late, hitting 21-for-45 (.467) and 11-for-26 (.423) while hitting in the lead-off spot in the last six games.

With the Yankees struggles to score runs; like they did on Saturday when they were one-hit by Toronto and Drew Hutchinson, having every necessary bat in the lineup is crucial to any kind of postseason hope and possible postseason run, and not having Ellsbury in the lineup would be a crushing blow.

“We need to stop losing series,” David Robertson said. “We need to start winning back-to-back games, taking two out of three or three out of four. We have to take advantage of the opportunities we have to win ballgames.”

Up first is the Red Sox, who would love nothing more than to spoil whatever hopes the Yankees still have. The Yankees are 8-5 this season against their long-time rivals, though they’re only 4-3 in their seven meetings in the Bronx.

Things get much tougher after Boston leaves town, as the AL Central-leading Royals visit this weekend, followed by the Rays, who are 8-5 against the Yankees.

The Yankees have eight series remaining this season, seven of them against AL East foes. At 70-65, they will likely need another 18-20 wins to capture the second wild card spot, meaning they need to win two out of three games the rest of the way.

To do so, the Yankees will have to figure out a way to score some more runs.
