Fedor Emelianenko returning to MMA  The former PRIDE FC heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko retired from combat sports back in 2012, three years later though the legendary champion has decided come back to active mixed martial arts competition.

According to Russia’s Union MMA, and subsequently confirmed by Bloody Elbow, the 38-year-old has recovered from some injuries and feels the time is right to fight again.

The now 38-year-old fighter from Stary Oskol has began training again and will be returning to the sport.

"For every athlete, it is very important to be able to engage in their favorite thing:  Give all the best in training, performing in competitions, defending the honor of the motherland," said a translated version of Emelianenko's comments in Russian to Union MMA.

"I was able to recover and heal old injuries," he said. "The last three years I have maintained physical form, but this level is not enough to go into battle, therefore recently I started intensive training. We have assembled a team of versatile coaches and athletes who will help me in the training process. There is still work to do to prepare to leave the ring. Negotiations are underway with promotions. Once agreements are reached, there will be information on the date of the fight and rival."

Emelianenko (34-4, 1 NC) hung up the gloves in 2012 after stringing together three straight wins. It was a refreshing turnaround after a disastrous three-fight skid that saw him finished in all three defeats.

Emelianenko is regarded by many as the greatest heavyweight in MMA history and the greatest mixed martial artist to have never competed in the UFC.
