Colts DE Kemoko Turay suffers broken ankle

Brutal news has landed for the Indianapolis Colts on a day when they should be celebrating. They entered Kansas City as underdogs to defeat the high-powered and seemingly unstoppable Chiefs led by reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes, but that's precisely what they did in an impressive 19-13 victory that saw them shut down the might Chiefs offense.

Turay got off to a strong start in helping the Colts effort, assisting on two tackles and a sack before being carted off with what appeared to be a leg injury. As it turns out, it was, and test results showed it's one that will end his 2019 season. The former second-round pick reportedly suffered a fractured ankle -- per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network -- and will now land on injured reserve.

A 2018 second-round pick

Turay was in the midst of what looked to be a breakout campaign, compiling 1.5 sacks through five games as a rotational rusher, playing 25.2 percent of the defensive snaps through five games, per Next Gen Stats.

The season-ending injury is a blow to a Colts defense that has dealt with significant injuries early in the campaign. The latest setback is just one more issue for Frank Reich's team to overcome in 2019.

Turay, who got most of his snaps in a backup role and on special teams, is one of the Colts' young pass-rushers who has spent a significant amount of time working with Justin Houston and former Colts defensive end Robert Mathis.

"One of the best things [Houston] said to me is that I have to learn to be a pass-rusher on both sides, the left and the right. Keep studying," Turay said last week. "Study the opponent. Put it on film that you play both sides and then you're giving O-linemen more to study instead of just one thing to study. You're playing chess with them."
