DL Damion Square re-signs with Chargers

On Wednesday, former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman Damion Square re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 31-year-old has been in the league since 2013 and has been a member of the Chargers since 2014.

Over the last three seasons, Square played in all 16 matches each season for the Chargers. He has played both defensive end and nose tackle.

Square came into the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent, signed by the Philadelphia Eagles. After playing six games in his rookie season with the Eagles, Square was released and eventually landed with the Chargers where he has spent the last six seasons as a versatile piece on the defensive line.

In his six-year tenure with the Chargers organization, Square has recorded 96 combined tackles, nine tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries. Last campaign, Square appeared in all 16 of the Chargers games, with four starts made at the nose tackle position, where he posted 27 total tackles with one tackle for loss and two pass deflections.

After starting the 2015 season on the Chargers’ practice squad, Square joined the active roster on November 4 and played in six games.

He re-signed with the club in March before serving a four-game suspension to begin the 2016 season.

On March 10, 2017, Square signed a two-year extension with the now Los Angeles Chargers. The 6-foot-3, 286-pound defensive lineman posted his best season in 2018 with 31 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, and three pass deflections.

A four-year letterman under Nick Saban at Alabama, Square was a starter on the Tide’s defensive line during back-to-back national title wins in 2011 and 2012. During his time in Tuscaloosa, Square recorded 93 total tackles with 18.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

Square was rated as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite out of Yates High School in Houston, TX during the 2008 recruiting cycle. He was the No.16-ranked strong-side defensive end and the No.36-ranked recruit in the state of Texas.
