Cavaliers waive veteran Kendrick Perkins

The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly released veteran center Kendrick Perkins on Tuesday.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news.

Perkins, 33, signed with the Cavs in April to be part of their playoff run. He played in just one game, and his tenure was most notable for his verbal altercations with Drake and Stephen Curry during the playoffs.

The Cavs picked up Perkins' team option in June, but that was non-guaranteed. Cleveland did so likely to facilitate a trade that never happened.

"I don't know why people keep wanting to pick battles this way," Perkins told Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe during the playoffs. "Might want to choose that [expletive] wisely, man, [rather] than [bleeping] with me. I don't think I'm the problem that they want, though, might want to pick another battle."

Perkins did not appear for Cleveland in the postseason and, save for his appearance in the last game of the regular season, hasn't played in the NBA for about two years. He came to training camp with the Cavs last September and spent the first part of the season with the Canton Charge of the G League.

The Cavs' roster now stands at 12, with three spots remaining. One will likely go to Rodney Hood, a restricted free agent. Cleveland has a $5.8 million trade exception that expires next month and two salary cap exceptions available.

One player currently on the roster, Okaro White, has a $1.5 million contract for next season that becomes 50-percent guaranteed on Aug. 5.

The Cavs continue to seem intent to maintaining their core group even after LeBron James' departure to the Lakers, rather than tank to begin a hard rebuild.

In the latest sign, following Cleveland's double overtime loss to the Lakers in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League semifinals on Monday, owner Dan Gilbert tweeted that the team (led by rookie Collin Sexton) "repped the franchise and the city of Cleveland with character, heart and guts we plan to continue this fall."
