CB Sheffield tears pec at combine

Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield suffered a torn left pectoral while bench pressing at the NFL scouting combine.

The Thurgood Marshall graduate and Missouri City native was in obvious pain following his seventh repetition.

Sheffield suffered a possible torn pectoral muscle during his bench-press test at the combine on Sunday and will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Sheffield yelled out in pain during his bench press, and did not appear for his scheduled media session later in the day. Sheffield was scheduled for all other physical testing on Monday when defensive backs perform on-field drills.

NFL.com named Sheffield, who has broken Buckeyes track records, the fastest player in the college game last year. The fastest 40 times clocked thus far at the combine have come from UMass WR Andy Isabella and Sheffield's teammate, Parris Campbell, at 4.31.

At last year's combine, former Ohio State OL Billy Price suffered a pec tear during bench press testing.

Sheffield, who played two seasons for the Buckeyes after transferring from Alabama, had a chance to raise his draft stock at least some in Indianapolis given his athleticism and explosiveness. Many scouts saw him as one of the best overall athletes on the draft board, but a player who needed far more consistency in his game.

While Sheffield should be ready for the start of the 2019 season, the injury almost certainly means he will not be able to participate in the Buckeyes' on-campus pro day later this month.

But Sheffield was just one of several players who saw his combine work end prematurely. Alexander suffered an upper-left leg injury in his second 40-yard dash attempt Sunday and did not complete his workout.

And Polite's workout ended when he told scouts he had a hamstring injury. Clemson linebacker Tre Lamar also ended his bench press effort as he grabbed his right shoulder and the right side of his chest.
