England rugby attack coach set to join Australia

Eddie Jones has confirmed attack coach Scott Wisemantel has left the England set-up.

The 49-year-old marshalled England’s attack as they were defeated by South Africa in the Rugby World Cup final earlier this month but after talks with England head coach Jones he has resolved to move on.

“Scott’s contract finished at the end of the Rugby World Cup and we had some discussions but he has decided to move on,” said Jones. “Whatever role he takes on next I know he will do an outstanding job because he was fantastic for us. We will miss him but we wish him all the best and his family.”

Wisemantel joined Jones’ coaching team during the summer of 2018. His temporary contract expired following loss to the Springboks in Japan. He is the second member of Jones’ staff to seek pastures new after scrum coach Neal Hatley returned to Bath following the World Cup.

Wisemantel has been tipped to join the Australia set-up under Dave Rennie, the current Glasgow Warriors coach who will take up the reins with the Wallabies at the end of the 2019-2020 campaing.

Johnson all-but confirmed the imminent move home for Wisemantel last week when announcing Rennie’s recruitment.

“Everyone knows he’s (Wisemantel) a good friend of mine, he’s had success where he’s gone, he’ll be a welcome addition,” said Johnson.

“(Taylor) – good mate of mine, worked with him, good skills, he’s certainly on the list, both are.

“We haven’t put a deadline on it but we’re going through the process.

“We’ve just concluded this one and we’ve spoken about the options that are available. We’d like to see that it moves quite quickly now.

Appreciative of the problems some have with his nationality, Rennie said it was important to have an all-Australian staff and to help develop coaching talent.
