Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

NHLThe Montreal Canadiens' 2014-15 NHL season is finally upon us! Sure, it hasn't been that long of an offseason after last year's playoff run, but any amount of time without hockey in Montreal feels like an eternity.

The Habs open up their season with games on back-to-back nights on the road. The first will be against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, followed by Washington's home opener the next night. They'll wrap up the week with their third game in four nights in Philadelphia on October 11.

So what can fans expect from the Canadiens this season? Well, a playoff berth is expected. Anything short of that would be a major disappointment. Individually, 30 wins from Carey Price, 30 goals from Max Pacioretty and 50 points from P.K. Subban all seem realistic.

Yet a lot more could be achieved from both the team and its players this year.

LEAFS INJURIES: D Cody Franson (knee), doubtful; LW David Booth (broken foot), 4-5 weeks, C Tyler Bozak (probable), lower-body injury.

No Canadiens injuries

PARENTEAU HURT

Top-line forward P-A Parenteau suffered a lower body injury in Ottawa Saturday but should be ready for the opener. Parenteau had 14 goals and 19 assists in 55 games a year ago, and lines up with Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais.

PRICE IN SPOTLIGHT

As usual, all eyes are on goalie Carey Price, who starred with Team Canada in Sochi then exited the playoffs early last spring with a knee injury. He was brilliant in a 2-0 exhibition loss to Washington over the weekend in which the defence offered little support.

UBBAN CONFIDENT

P.K. Subban, the Norris Trophy winner starting an eight-year, $72-million contract, says the Canadiens are the team to beat — after the defending champion Kings: “Everybody wants to beat us. We have the most Stanley Cups (24) in the league. People want to beat us every time they play us. We’re the No. 1 target. Other than the Stanley Cup champion, we’re the next ones in line. Everybody’s trying to catch us.” Subban also made headlines for a different reason this week, admitting in an interview that he flatulates in front of the Habs net to annoy opposition players.

ROAD WARRIORS

The Canadiens flew into Toronto Tuesday afternoon and begin the season with four road games before their home opener against the Bruins at the Bell Centre on Oct. 16. They made their final roster cut Tuesday when rookie forward Jacob de la Rose was sent to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL. Montreal brass were pleased with the 19-year-old Swedish player’s effort and said he could be back with the big club some time this season.
