The long offseason will finally come to an end Today as the Indianapolis Colts travel to Metlife Stadium to take on the New York Jets in their first preseason game.

The New York Jets brought in big-name free agents to upgrade their offense while the Indianapolis Colts made less flashy signings to upgrade their receiving corps and defense.

The New York Jets will make their preseason debut against the Indianapolis Colts. The Jets will be showcasing their free-agent signings for the first time as the Colts look to develop chemistry on a team that is returning mostly intact.

The Jets upgraded their receiving corps by signing Eric Decker and upgraded at running back by signing Chris Johnson. They are also expected to possibly have a quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick, who was also signed in free agency.

The Colts signed a few free agents of their own such as wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, defensive end Arthur Jones and inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson.

Nicks has struggled with his conditioning in the offseason, but he will look to fight for a starting spot. Jones and Jackson were brought in to upgrade a struggling Colts defense.

Quarterback Andrew Luck enters his third year with the Colts, and he will look to take the next step forward as the Jets hope to see their offense improve with their upgrades. Smith will need to perform well enough to fight off Vick for good.

Here’s some key things to keep an eye on:

Offensive line play: Losing Donald Thomas again is a devastating injury to the Colts’ front five, and I’m not so certain that the current guys we have in place will be able to make an impact.

Donte Moncrief:  He has had an impressive training camp and has firmly cemented his spot at No. 4 on the depth chart.

The Fifth Receiver Spot: Since LaVon Brazill’s suspension and release, neither Griff Whalen nor Da’Rick Rogers has stood out. This Thursday’s game is a chance for both players to show what they mean to the offense and they will each have ample opportunities to do so.

Third Running Back: Vick Ballard is gone. Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw firmly have the starting and backup spots locked up, but the third running back spot is a wide open competition.

Bjoern Werner:  Werner could provide a huge lift on defense.

Strong Safety: Right now, Delano Howell is in to start at the strong safety position against the Jets.
